How French banking coordinates form the BBAN

France uses a 27-character IBAN. The national BBAN described in the Swift IBAN Registry contains the banking coordinates shown on a relevé d'identité bancaire (RIB): a five-digit code banque, five-digit code guichet, eleven-character account section, and two-digit clé RIB. The account section can contain letters as well as digits, which is an important difference from several neighboring formats. A letter in the French account portion should therefore be preserved rather than deleted simply because the rest of an invoice line looks mostly numeric.

When reviewing a French IBAN, first remove print-format spaces without changing the order or case of the characters, then confirm that the compact value still has 27 characters and starts with FR. Long French values can wrap across a PDF line or be copied with punctuation from adjacent text. Another frequent error is confusing the final national check key with the two international IBAN check digits near the start. The France format record also covers specified French territories in the Registry, but that technical scope does not decide the payment route, currency, fees, or provider requirements for a particular transfer. Keep any BIC, beneficiary name, invoice reference, and amount outside the IBAN field. A passed format check does not show that the account is open or belongs to the intended recipient. Confirm changed or unfamiliar instructions through a trusted contact method before payment, especially when an invoice asks you to replace previously stored bank details.
