The national check character in Italian coordinates

Italy uses a 27-character IBAN with a distinctive national check character at the beginning of its BBAN. According to the Swift IBAN Registry, the 23-character Italian BBAN is composed of one alphabetic national check character, a five-digit bank identifier, a five-digit branch identifier, and a twelve-character account section. In the example on this page, the X immediately after the international check digits is therefore part of the IBAN. Removing it would shift every following field and make the value incomplete.

On an Italian invoice, compare the print and digital versions character by character. Spaces may be removed for a compact payment field, but the national check character, bank block, branch block, and any leading zero in the account section must remain. A common copy error is to treat the first BBAN letter as a label or separator. Another is to paste a tax, invoice, or payment reference onto the end of the account value. Length and MOD97-10 checks can flag many alterations without identifying their business cause.

The visible bank and branch segments describe positions in the national format; BankCodeKit does not use them to look up a current Italian institution or branch. It also cannot determine whether an account accepts the intended currency or transfer type. Keep the BIC and recipient details as separate fields, and verify the full payment instruction if it arrived through a new email thread or changed from an earlier invoice.
