How to Check a SEPA Transfer's Status
Check a SEPA transfer's status with your sending provider, distinguish dispatch from receipt, and prepare an enquiry without sharing details here.
Who this guide is useful for
Senders checking a payment they have already authorised, and recipients waiting for a transfer. Start with the sending service's transaction record; a country lookup cannot locate the payment.
Turn a status label into a useful question
| What you see | What to establish | Question for your provider |
|---|---|---|
| Pending or processing | Whether the service needs an action from you | Is this scheduled, awaiting information, or being processed? |
| Sent or completed | Which event this particular label confirms | Has it been dispatched, or is receipt confirmed? |
| Failed or returned | The reason and any separate return record | What happened, and where can I check the return? |
1. Open the transfer with the sending service
Use the bank app or website you normally access, then find the individual payment in its transaction history. BankCodeKit has no connection to that record and does not ask for your transaction ID, IBAN or login. For example, Wise directs customers to select a transfer from their account activity to see progress, delays and an updated arrival estimate. Other providers may use different screens and labels.
- Read the exact status beside the individual transfer, not just the balance or the payment form.
- Check whether it was scheduled for a later date and which transfer type the service recorded.
- Keep the sending date, amount, currency and provider reference ready inside your private records.
2. Separate sending progress from confirmed receipt
A request being accepted, money leaving the sender and a credit appearing in the recipient's account are different events. Read the explanation attached to your provider's status. If it says sent or completed, ask which event that label confirms. If it says pending, check whether the provider is waiting for an action from you. A failed or returned label needs its own explanation and any refund record; it is not a reason to send a duplicate payment immediately.
- Ask whether the status confirms dispatch or credit to the recipient.
- Use the estimate and support instructions attached to this transfer. This guide sets no universal arrival deadline.
- Keep the original reference distinct from any support case number or return reference.
3. Ask the sender's provider about an investigation
When the transaction record does not answer the question, contact the sending provider through its established support channel. Ask what evidence it has of dispatch, receipt or return, and whether a payment investigation is appropriate. N26's guidance describes a sender-bank investigation that can request confirmation from the receiving bank. It distinguishes this from trying to recall a payment, whose outcome is not guaranteed. Other providers' processes and charges can differ; confirm the terms before requesting an investigation.
4. If you are waiting to receive money
Ask the sender to open their transfer record and check the current status with the service they used. You can ask your own bank about a matching incoming credit, using the details it requests through a secure channel. If a formal trace is needed, ask the sender to contact their sending provider. N26's published process specifically puts an investigation with the sender's bank; it does not offer a public lookup by transaction number.
N26: checking a transfer's status or requesting a recall
- A screenshot supplied by the sender is context for an enquiry; verify the credit in your own account.
- If payment details may be wrong or fraud is suspected, contact the sending provider promptly about its available options.
A message to use in your provider's secure support channel
Please confirm whether this transfer was sent, returned, or is still being processed, and which reference I should use for an enquiry. Does the current status confirm receipt by the recipient? Is a payment investigation needed, and what terms or charges apply?
- Choose the transfer in your provider's app before contacting support, if that option exists.
- Provide the date, amount, currency and reference only through the provider's secure channel when requested.
- Keep the support case number and the explanation of the next step in your own records.
- Do not post a receipt, account number, transaction reference or login on BankCodeKit.
Important limitations
Format checks only. This guide does not confirm account existence, ownership, bank reachability, or payment success. Read the detailed disclaimer for the full limitation list.
- This guide explains where to ask; it cannot retrieve, trace, cancel or recall a payment.
- Provider examples illustrate their published processes and are not instructions for every bank.
- A SEPA country match or valid IBAN does not establish where an existing transfer is.
- Receipt confirmation and a request to return money are different tasks with different outcomes.
FAQ
Can I track a SEPA transfer with an IBAN here?
No. BankCodeKit has no access to transaction records. Open the payment with the sending bank or provider and use its status or support service.
Does a completed label prove the recipient received the money?
Check your provider's definition. Ask whether it confirms dispatch or a credit to the recipient; the label alone is not enough to interpret another provider's process.
What should a recipient ask the sender to do?
Ask the sender to check the transfer record and contact their sending provider if its status is unclear. Keep sensitive payment details within the providers' secure support channels.
Should I request a status check or a recall?
A status enquiry asks where the payment is. A recall asks for an attempt to return it. Explain which outcome you need and ask the provider about its procedure and any charges.
